Chinese basketball prospect Yang Hanshen expressed pleasant surprise after being selected with the 16th pick by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2023 NBA Draft. The young center becomes just the third Chinese player ever to be chosen in the first round of the NBA draft.
"The Trail Blazers scouts came to China multiple times to evaluate me, and we had great conversations during my workouts," Yang revealed. "While I considered the possibility of Portland selecting me, being chosen at No. 16 still exceeded my expectations."
The 7-foot center from Qingdao has drawn comparisons to NBA veteran Nikola Jokic for his exceptional passing skills and basketball IQ. His selection continues China’s growing presence in the NBA, following in the footsteps of Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian as first-round picks.
