In a disappointing start to their Wimbledon campaign, China’s Wang Xinyu and Zheng Saisai were eliminated in the first round of women’s doubles on Wednesday. The unseeded Chinese pair fell 0-2 (1-6, 4-6) to second seeds Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada and Erin Routliffe of New Zealand.
The match lasted just 68 minutes on Court 5, with the experienced second seeds demonstrating superior net play and court coverage. Dabrowski/Routliffe, who won the 2023 US Open together, broke serve five times during the match while saving three of four break points they faced.
Wang and Zheng, playing their first Grand Slam together since reuniting this season, struggled to find rhythm against the higher-ranked opponents. The Chinese duo managed just one break of serve in the opening set and couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities in the tighter second set.
This marks Wang’s earliest exit in Wimbledon women’s doubles after reaching the third round in 2023. For Zheng, the 30-year-old veteran, it continues a challenging comeback from injury that has seen her ranking drop outside the top 100 in doubles.
The victorious Canadian-New Zealand pairing will face either Miyu Kato/Aldila Sutjiadi or Cristina Bucsa/Alexandra Panova in the second round as they continue their quest for a second Grand Slam title together.
